Since I have begun my studies in the EDLD program I have had the opportunity to learn and read about concepts that I think have expanded my understanding of teaching and learning. This has lead to a shift in my focus of how to teach and lead learners to make more meaningful connections in their own learning. This shift for me was from a more controlling standard model of education to COVA. The COVA model gives choice, voice, ownership, through authentic learning opportunities. I have experienced this recently with one of my daughters. She wanted to learn to play guitar. So we got her a guitar and I started teaching her lessons. The lessons did not go anywhere really. She did not enjoy having to play the technical things I said she should practice. So we made a shift. I shared some ideas on Youtube and apps we could use. Now on her own she is off and running. Every evening I can hear her playing things she has found in lessons on line. I may have been to excited at first and felt like I had to be directly involved but all I had to do was provide a direction and the necessary tools and she was good to go.
