I suggest the student owns the work if they want to. As I study this topic I was presented with three points of view. The traditional instructors point of view with the need to have concrete requirements for students that in the end limit ownership of the students in the work. In other words the student is only doing the work to satisfy what they believe the instructor wants in exchange for the good grade. The second perspective is that of the instructor pushing the limits to create the learning environment where the student wants to seize ownership of their work and is proud to do so and sees value in it. The third perspective is that of the student. The student is just trying to get through a program as best they can. As Rickard (2015) suggests, a student is not going to want to take ownership of the work if they have not been given ownership opportunities and are fearful of embarrassment for what could be perceived as inferior work. However, when students have the opportunity through the appropriate learning environment they have great chances to demonstrate their learning connections and carry that learning and knowledge with them beyond the school or program where their work was created according to Watters (2015). So ownership depends on the learning environment and the student. If the student is doing the work to make meaningful connections and show that in their reflections and work on their domain then they will have ownership. As Harapnuik (2020) suggests learning is gained by making those meaningful connections. The instructor must design a learning environment that allows for the students ownership.
